Recruitment in Schools

The preservation and development of the quality and distinctive nature of Catholic schools depends on the faith, practice and commitment of the teachers in the schools, working with their Governing Body.

The Catholic Church understands the vocation of a teacher as a form of ministry within the Church. 1 All teachers in Catholic schools are employed to participate in the Church’s teaching office, exercising this ministry in accordance with the Church’s teachings. This requires teachers to be witnesses in word and deed to the Divine Teacher, Jesus Christ.2

To find Catholic teachers who combine personal conviction and practice of the faith with the required professional qualifications and experience, especially in specialist subjects, is always a high priority.

Governing Bodies, as the employers of staff, have a duty to ensure that the Catholic character of the school is maintained and developed. The Bishops’ expect that Governing Bodies will employ Catholic teachers who combine personal conviction and practice of the faith with the required professional qualifications and experience, in order to ensure this.

Reserved Posts: Senior leadership posts (Headteacher or equivalent and Deputy Head) and Head of RE (or equivalent) within schools and academies must be filled by practising Catholics who can show, by example and from experience, that they will ensure that the school or academy is distinctively Catholic in all aspects.

Guidance must be sought from NORES before reserved posts are advertised and a member of NORES staff must be part of any interview process. The full procedure for recruitment can be founf in the NORES Guidane - Staffing document below.   If you have any questions regarding recruitment, please contact Mgr Kevin McGinnell on 01582 723312 or mcginnell@nores.org.uk
